The London Climate Resilience Review (LCRR) has published its final report to the Mayor of London.
The LCRR was commissioned by the Mayor because of the growing concerns surrounding climate change.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said “It is essential that we invest in key sectors and prepare our public services so that London can continue to grow and thrive in the face of climate change, and the review provides clarity and direction on how to do this.”
London has seen a number of climate-related emergencies in recent years, including the heatwave a few years ago that saw the UK reach temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius.
This report highlights the need for more preparation and resilience in the capital, as more emergency situations are likely. The London Communities Emergencies Partnership (LCEP) will have a key role to play in this. LCEP supports charities and community groups to be more resilient in the face of emergencies. A resilient voluntary sector creates more resilient communities, and the report demonstrates the importance of this going forward.”
Here are a few key points from the report:
- Future housing developments should include updated standards to cope with weather extremes
- A national wildfire strategy is needed
- Thames flood defences must be upgraded
- London’s green and blue spaces are at risk from extreme weather
- Climate change could impact London’s GDP by 2-3% every year by the 2050s
