Every year, the London Communities Emergencies Partnership (LCEP) hosts a winter preparedness workshop to help charities and community groups prepare for the colder months. This year, the workshop was organised alongside The London Boroughs Faiths Network.
We host a range of speakers from prominent organisations in London to talk about projects and services that may be useful for your organisation, or the people you support.
2024 was no exception! This year, we welcomed speakers from the Met Office, Age UK London, British Red Cross, Greater London Authority, and much more!

Met Office – winter climate
The Met Office discusses the drop in temperature that marks the coldest months of the year. They also mention their National Severe Weather Warning Service, which gives information on the severity of different weather conditions. Other topics include the WeatherReady campaign, as well as the UK Health Security Agency ‘Cold Weather Alert Service’.
UK Health Security Agency – winter preparedness for London’s communities
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is a government agency that prevents, prepares for and responds to infectious diseases and environmental hazards. In this presentation they discuss a variety of vaccination programmes, including COVID-19, Influenza, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). They also include general information on keeping well in winter.
Age UK London – winter health programme for over 60s
In this presentation you can find out more about Age UK London and their winter health campaign. The campaign focuses on encouraging people to accept seasonal vaccinations in London.
National Flood Forum – London community flood action plan programme
The National Flood Forum‘s action plan helps to develop a community-led approach to flooding in London. They talk about success stories from the project as well as information on how to get involved.
British Red Cross – Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP)
The Severe Weather Emergency Protocol is a process to minimise harm or death to anyone who is unhoused during periods of severe weather. Here, British Red Cross gives more detail about SWEP and explains how the voluntary sector is involved. They also spend some time talking about power outages.

Greater London Authority (GLA) – cost of living hub
The Greater London Authority cost of living hub is an online hub for Londoners who are struggling with the cost of living. In this presentation they take us through the hub, explaining the range of resources and tools that it has to offer.
The Outside Project – cold weather emergency drop-in
The Outside Project is an LGBTQI+ organisation that runs a crisis centre and outreach service. They have a cold weather drop-in centre for people of marginalised identities who may be facing difficulties with housing during the colder months. The Outside Project also discusses some of the unique difficulties faced by people in the LGBTQI+ community.
London Fire Brigade – stakeholder winter toolkit
The London Fire Brigade are running a winter safety campaign. During winter, the Fire Brigade see increased callouts for a number of things, including:
- Road traffic collisions
- Alternative heating methods (like portable heaters)
- Flooding
- Firework usage
- Cooking fires
- Alcohol-related incidents
- Electrical goods and lithium-ion battery usage
The winter safety campaign promotes safety around these issues. The London Fire Brigade has also released a toolkit so organisations can help to promote the campaign, which you can download below.
