On 5th February 2025, the government met with bereaved relatives and survivors from the Grenfell Tower fire. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner announced at this meeting that it has been decided to dismantle Grenfell Tower. A formal announcement by the government is expected to be made on Friday.
On 14 June 2017, the Grenfell Tower fire took the lives of 72 people. Nearly eight years on, the decision to take down the tower is a highly sensitive and emotional moment. At this time, we are thinking of the family, friends and the community affected by this decision.
The responses from bereaved families and survivors we’re already hearing today show this decision is generating deep emotions for the families still seeking justice and for criminal action to be brought against those implicated in the Grenfell Inquiry.
Here at London Plus, we will continue to work hard with our partners at VCS Emergencies Partnership through the London Communities Emergency Partnership to work with charities, faith and community groups and public bodies across London to better prepare for and respond to emergencies of all sorts.
In supporting the development of a more resilient London, we hope to to make sure future emergency responses fully take on board the voice, perspectives, needs and strengths of London’s diverse communities.
